Press Relase: TRUMPF Closes its Tube-Bending Plant in Reutlingen
Posted by: Hydro_Publishing on Wednesday, July 16, 2003 - 06:48 PM

News Reutlingen/Ditzingen, July 15, 2003 The TRUMPF Group has closed down TRUMPF Rohrtechnik GmbH + Co. KG, its Reutlingen-based subsidiary. Production and distribution of tube-bending machines have now ceased with immediate effect. TRUMPF will continue to service all machines. The Training Center of TRUMPF Werkzeugmaschinen GmbH + Co. KG, which opened around one year ago, will remain at the Reutlingen site.

As a result of this decision, TRUMPF Rohrtechnik GmbH + Co. KG is terminating all 45 employment contracts within a stipulated time limit. Investigation is under way to ascertain whether cooperation with an employment company would make any sense, and whether alternative jobs within the group of companies can be offered to individual employees.

In the year 2000 the TRUMPF Group had a majority participation in Pulzer Biegetechnik GmbH, the predecessor of TRUMPF Rohrtechnik GmbH + Co. KG. The TRUMPF Group then went on to acquire the company completely in 2001.

With this acquisition it was expected that the technology of hydroforming would gain acceptance and be broadly used, most especially in the automotive construction sector. This expectation has not been fulfilled. The sophisticated technology of tube-bending as provided by TRUMPF Rohrtechnik is an important prerequisite for the hydroforming of tubes.

Revenues in this sector have thus been largely minimal. Despite considerable research and development efforts there has been no compensation in other markets, nor any growth whatsoever. The Reutlingen-based company has been strongly affected by the continuing economic weakness and investment reluctance in Germany its main sales market at present. In foreign markets, the tube-bending company's activities with its special machinery have only been limited.

TRUMPF Rohrtechnik has been through a difficult phase, and sales figures have declined. Over the past two years, revenues at the Reutlingen-based company have dropped very sharply, and it has made considerable losses.

TRUMPF is not expecting any alteration in market conditions, and so immediate closure of TRUMPF Rohrtechnik GmbH + Co. KG is the necessary entrepreneurial consequence.TRUMPF Rohrtechnik GmbH und Co. KG will continue to fulfill its obligations toward its customers and business partners, and smooth service for all tube-bending machines already delivered is guaranteed.

TRUMPF is seeking alternative use for the office and production space that has now been vacated. Utilization within the group of companies is being considered, as is rental to other firms.

In 2001, TRUMPF Werkzeugmaschinen GmbH + Co. KG moved sections of its training activities for punching tools and laser processing to Reutlingen. The Training Center will remain at the Reutlingen site. Its activities involve around 200 week-long training courses every year, with up to 10 participants.
